Here's how I interpret it.  The enthusiasm for adding or improving ODF 
support for the N+1 word processor, decreases as N increases.  I wouldn't 
expect much excitement in a Google Summer of Code project for improving 
ODF support in the 6th most popular ODF-supporting word processor.

Also, writing new code is always more fun than cleaning up existing code. 
I'd expect in an self-selecting arrangement like Summer of Code, that most 
project proposals will be for new projects, or adding new modules to 
existing projects.

If I was entering a proposal, it would not be to improve ODF support for 
Abi, although my enthusiasm for ODF is undoubted.  Instead I would propose 
to create some killer demos of what you can do with ODF 1.2 RDF metadata, 
or something like that.
