IMHO, we should watch these articles and members of this group should reply
and correct inaccuracies as appropriate. Just my two cents.

*"With all the pieces floating around on OOXML, it's been hard to get a good
sense of where it is in the standardization process. Fortunately, IBM's Rob
Weir has a provided us a road
map<http://www.robweir.com/blog/2008/01/you-are-here.html>.
Today Microsoft is due to submit its set of proposals for resolving the
3,522 comments to JTC1, which controls OOXML. Tomorrow or soon after, we can
expect a media blitz heralding these 'changes,' as numerous reporters are,
reportedly, being flown to Redmond. But all those recommendations are
non-binding, because only JTC1 can change the standard and that happens
during the Ballot Resolution Meeting. And even if all of the recommendations
are adopted, no one has to change their vote. The BRM, where all the real
work will happen, isn't until February 25-29. Within the 30 days after that,
everyone will be able to reconsider their vote. That's when we can expect
the real fireworks."*

*"NLnet, a Dutch foundation for an open information society, has publicly
called for Microsoft to release its deprecated formats into the public
domain <http://nlnet.nl/press/20080114-formats.html>. The maker of Office
has made large efforts during the last year to move against the OpenDocument
Format (ISO/IEC 26300). These efforts have been producing a lot of
commentary regarding the amount of data bound up in the Redmond-based
company's proprietary specifications. It's a nasty situation to end up with
files that cannot be
read<http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/01/01/137257&tid=109>because
the sole vendor with the documentation for the files has withdrawn
permission. ODF is the way forward, or a step forward at the least, with new
documents. But for the old documents in the legacy formats, they cannot be
read without supporting software and that support requires full access to
the specifications."*
