Microsoft's controversial bid to have its Open XML format fast-tracked as an
ISO standard has turned into a riot, according to a leading analyst.

...

Mitchell also attacked the 'no' voters who can't justify their actions. "If
people vote no or yes you would really like to know why. I have spoken to
some people who've voted no and asked them why and they said 'because we
don't like it'. If people are representing their country they should be able
to more clearly defend what their national technological position is."

Let's see, on the topic of unjustifiable positions, from off the top of my
head:

   - NB contradictions of draft international standards are only proper
if two file formats can't coexist on the same hard drive.
   - Only contradictions with ISO/IEC standards can be considered.
   - Only the technical excellence of a standard is relevant.
   - Competing Incompatible Standards Are a Very Good Thing
   - The Open Specification Promise allows any developer to use OOXML
   - DIS-29500 was designed for interoperability
   - DIS-29500 enables conversion of "legacy" binary formats to OOXML.
   - There was a market requirement for conversion of binary formats to
OOXML before Ecma started to develop the specification.
   - Available converters provide interoperability with ODF apps.
   - The ISO/IEC CIOs have ruled that there are no IPR issues with OOXML.
   - Novell and Apple implementations of OOXML prove that the Open
Specification Promise allows any developer to implement the specification.
   - Interoperability means 1-way trips rather than 2-way trips
   - DIS 29500 is 6037 pages long because it is more fully specified than
   ODF.
   - Allowing multiple but incompatible scalable vector formats in a
compound document standard is a Very Good Thing.
   - A leap year bug is necessary in a standard for backward
   compatibility reasons.
   - On and on and on ...

Anyone else recall any good ones? It might be fun to build a list of
Microsoft unjustifiable positions. :-)
