"South Africa's recent adoption of the ODF standard represents a tact
that will blunt innovation, much needed for their developing economy.
The policy choice – which actually reduces software choice – runs
contrary to worldwide policy trends, where multiple standards rule,
thus threatening to separate South Africa from the wealth creating
abilities of the global ICT industry."

Sure, just think how many more wrenches you could sell if every bolt
manufacturer had its own unique standard for the sizes and shapes of
bolt heads. And imagine how many more tapping dies you could sell if
every bolt manufacturer used unique "standard" thread widths. In fact,
let's do away with mass production entirely and go back to the days
when every product was one of a kind. Every bolt and wrench should be
custom-made. We could charge so much more for each product that we'd
all just be swimming in wealth.
Not.
