During the night for Europe last night, there arose an enormous clatter on
Slashdot about Miguel de Icaza's comments on a discuss list about MOOX
supposedly being "an excellent standard."

I am a big fan of Miguel's, but even someone we admire can occasionally make
mistakes. It appears that Miguel has made a couple of mistakes here:
1) speaking off the cuff about a "standard" that he's actually not wild
about, and
2) then defending it, so as to give the misapprehension that he supports
OOXML more than a close reading of
If you read Miguel's comments in the story, you will see that he does have
reservations about MOOX:

And, at any rate, Miguel likes the fact that ODF has forced the MOOX specs
into public view.
Well worth reading, because how many industries are there in which you can
see unvarnished comments by one of the greatest minds in the industry? And,
at the end of the day, I think that there are few people who will dispute
the fact that Miguel de Icaza is one of the greatest minds in the computer
industry today, and probably for the last quarter century.
