Did you mean OOXML? Personally I'd rather they didn't but I don't think
it kicks up the same emotions as if a NFP focused on software freedom
did it.

I fail to see any real link here, you are comparing apples with oranges.

Sure and Apple basically used BSD and then made it proprietary. It's not
a perfect world and some imperfections cause more angst than others
because humans are emotional as well as logical creatures. Personally I
think that is something we don't want to eradicate ;-)
