I do know you can use OOo Base as a front-end for MySQL and that data
can be imported and exported, but that knowledge comes via a friend who
does just that using OOo and MySQL for at least one of his businesses
(which is now large enough that he has hired others to manage the
operations and employees).

I'm not even a novice in OOo Base, so what your contact want *might* be
doable but I am not the one with knowledge to explain it.

But, as far as other tools go, have they tried Koffice's Kivio?
