We're affiliated with the FSF and GNU, but the "GNOME is a GNU Project"
thing is a relic of the past.

Sometimes I (and indeed, the GNOME Foundation) disagree with his opinion. I
think you'll find that is actually quite a common phenomenon in the FLOSS
world, despite his stature. :-) (Not sure why you assume disrespect first.)
