Interesting idea, but I need convincing.  What's in it for those wishing a 
universal office format, other than lost time?

My take is that Ecma 376 is so hopelessly tied to MS Office, that it would 
be impossible for a complete third party implementation.  That's not 
counting the licensing problems.  So rather than trying to teach that pig 
to sing, effort would be better spent seeing that it dies the quick and 
peaceful death it deserves so that we can all get back to work on 
initiatives that will provide a real payoff in interoperability (e.g. 
harmonization of China's UOF with ISO's ODF)
