Yes, although there was at least one version that didn't make any
changes in the file format for Word, so the previous version could
still open documents generated by the later version. But otherwise
it's been backward compatibility only, no forward compatibility until
now. It's an incredible change in Microsoft's business plan. I've been
surprised the issue hasn't been raised by the financial analysts.
