Shameless Off Topic Plug...
I always build my own machines (and many of those for my family) and I still
get it wrong from time to time - plenty of research, good luck and sometimes
just doing it are required.
For those interested I've documented my desktop box (3 built so far)

I'm using Kubuntu on most machines now, except for the print server which
does not have enough memory to load it, so I run Debian on that.
