you're interested in a relatively painless apt-get solution for newbies, try
the Adept package manager, which is widely available
But Ubuntu-based distros still have problems with many dual core, 64-bit
Intel motherboards and chipsets. I happen to have one of them and neither
Kubuntu or MEPIS installs were painless, mainly because Intel's Linux driver
and BIOS support for my hardware is sadly lacking. In working around those
problems, I learned searching on the web that these are commonly encountered
install problems for Ubuntu-based distributions.
Lessons learned: [i] check out new hardware compatibility even more
carefully before buying it; [ii] installing an Ubuntu-based system isn't
going to let you sidestep lesson 1; and [iii] AMD has a big head start over
Intel on dual core 64-bit Linux support.
