[odf-discuss] A story of TIFF

Anything depending on MS cooperation is going to be impractical. See
past experiences with Samba, Java, LDAP, Kerberos, HTML, HTTP, TCP/IP to
name a few.

One of the core arguments MS boosters are using to support Ecma 376 are
(in my eyes) unsubstantiated claims of interoperability with the the old
binary formats from legacy apps like MS Office which (in my eyes) seems
to consist just of wrapping an undocumented BLOB in XML.

If lossless mapping of the old binary formats from legacy apps like MS
Office to OpenDocuent is important, then why deal at all with Ecma 376?
Ecma 376 doesn't seem to address them in any level of detail, anyway.

IIRC, several courts have ordered that the specs for the old binary
formats be pulished. Why not go straight to the source, so to speak,
which would be the specs for those binaries? Anything else is probably to
going to result in a lot of wasted effort.
