Actually... all I did was narrate the story of TIFF :)

I feel that it's useful to learn from history. Several things went wrong
with TIFF. The spec grew too complex, and every vendor decided to pick
and choose what features they wanted. This made TIFF lose all its
benefits.

It sounds ironic, but if TIFF had had _fewer_ extensions, it would have
worked better. Sure, some vendors would have cried that they didn't get
their pet extension in. But TIFF would then be a useful format for data
exchange instead of mostly a container format.

I don't want ODF to go the way of TIFF.
