Try this page from Wikimedia; it's a Robinson projection, which is 
neither equal area nor angle-preserving, but does a better job of land 
mass than Mercator.

Drawn in Inkscape; looks great in batik (xml.apache.org/batik), 

Bonus: each country is in a separate path description, so colorising one
country is a fairly easy task; just add some class descriptions to the 
stylesheet.
