While I am hopeful of the same, I think it important to note that ODF is not
the guaranteed winner. What is fairly certain, I think, is that some XML
format is going to win that contest and that it will be a format allowing
far richer formatting than XHTML/CSS. ODF is a very good candidate,
primarily because it is open, has most of the needed features, and thus far
has the needed momentum in terms of adoption.

The history of the web teaches that there is a constant drive to expand the
range of formatting features that can be used on a web page, hence my
confidence that (X)HTML and CSS will not keep their leadership long.

As an aside, that also points longer term to a source of support for the ODF
format, bandwidth providers. They undoubtedly would love to see a web
standard file format that renders dial-up connections obsolete. :-)
