You're missing something. BibTeX has a bad data model, no decent
international support, is LaTeX-only, etc., and I've never seen a free
software app based on it that came anywhere near something like
Zotero.

It may partly be a matter of perspective though. I and the Zotero team
leads are from the social science/humanities realm, where citation
practices are much more demanding than in the sciences (BibTEX's
primary realm).
