Chris,
I'm the co-project lead for the OpenOffice bibliographic project, as
well as a member of the OASIS ODF TC, where I am working on the next
generation metadata support there. One of the core use cases for that
work is citations.
Anyway ...

I've been been collaborating with them on their citation styling
system and RDF data exchange format, so it's a no-brainer that getting
it hooked up to OOo makes a lot of sense.
In general, Endnote sucks (I'm a former user and beta tester). That
users feel tied to it is a testament to how poorly the market has
addressed their needs, but I'm optimistic Zotero + ODF metadata in 1,2
will help change that.
So have them look at Zotero and see if they're excited about that. My
guess is they will be; it's quite well-done. Then help us -- in
whatever way you can -- push forward on integration with ODF editors.
Bruce
