The latter information can be gleaned from the EndNote website...
Although I've also learned EndNote is applying for patents, which may
put a few extra hurdles in the way of an alternative solution. The
patent application probably states "way of doing bibliographies and
referencing automatically while using online resources" and would
therefore cover people putting a footnote in a document while having a
web browser open. ;-)
