Aside from the speed thing - which I'm not convinced about - there's
also the fact that the two formats are _not_ feature-equivalent - the
OXML is a strict superset.

I don't see why Microsoft would go to the effort of upgrading all the
binary stuff to handle the new features in the format simply so they
could use a two-step approach.

(Btw, Occam's razor is "Once you discount all other possibilities;
whatever remains - no matter how unlikely - is the truth" - that Office
12 loads the XML natively hasn't been discounted afaik)
