Hello,
I'd like to point out the while the CC Attribution license
works well when the icon is distributed as part of a larger
software package, it does not work at all well in the more
general case where the icon is composed into larger artwork
or other material. It makes it difficult to use the icon
in promotional materials and to freely share the icon and
build upon it. Why? Because the CC Attribution license
suffers from the same flaws as the original BSD license,
larger works require increasingly large amounts of attached
paperwork. Paperwork which quickly becomes burdensome
in relation to the amount of benefit gained by, for
example, producing a sticker with the ODF icon on it
to hand out on the street.
For a more detailed explanation, see:
http://www.openclipart.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ#Why_does_the_Open_Clip_Art_Library_require_artwork_be_covered_as_.27Public_Domain.27.3F__What_about_GPL.2FLGPL.2Fother.3F

P.S. You may also wish to consider trademarking the icon.
The benefits of this could well outweigh any restrictions
a trademark may place on the incorporation of the icon
into larger works.
P.P.S. Your page http://opendocumentfellowship.org/icons
is slightly duplicitous in that it says that you may be
contacted at odf-discuss at opendocumentfellowship.org but
does not mention that you must first subscribe. I'm not
interested in subscribing at this time.

Hi Karl,
Would the new BSD license work?
Cheers,
Daniel.

For everyone else: I agree with Karl that the CC Attribution license is
a problem for the icon. The icon is the sort of thing that you want used
everywhere. Note, for example, that CC-BY is not GPL-compatible so as it
stands it cannot be reused by KDE, Gnome or OpenOffice.org in their
iconsets. Other products may have trouble with the attribution
requirement. OpenClipart also won't post anything that's not public
domain.
A good start would be to make the icon new-BSD licensed. So it becomes
compatible with KDE, Gnome, OOo and proprietary software. I'd like to
hear Marbux's opinion on the merits of a trademark. And is it possible
to have a public-domain icon and still have a trademark?
These are things I don't really understand and would love to get some
informed opinions.
For registering the trademark, I can think of two options:
1) Pete can register it himself, under his name.
2) We can form a company limited by guarantee in the UK (similar to a
non-profit in the US, but with much less hassle) called "OpenDocument
Fellowship" that could own the trademark.
There are pros and cons to both options. On the one hand, Pete might not
like the idea of someone else having the trademark to his work. On the
other, developers might trust a non-profit more than a person.
Cheers,
Daniel.

I'm afraid not because it requires the license be distributed
along with the artwork, which is the original problem.
Artwork is just to "small", and unlike software, not amenable
to having licenses attached. Thus the difficulty in aggregation/
extension.
Larry Ewing's Tux license "Permission to use and/or modify this
image is granted provided you acknowledge me lewing at isc.tamu.edu
and The GIMP if someone asks." is about as restrictive as is
convenient, because of the "if". It does not require the
licensing terms be distributed along with the work. (Even
Larry's license might be too much because of the "license
proliferation" problem.)
