It's not so much from the complexity of the algorithm.  That can be 
cracked.  The problem is that losing 20 bytes from a raw data stream may 
be a minor inconvenience, but it may be a catastrophy to be lost from a 
stream that is compressed 100:1 or 1000:1.

About a year before BYTE got shutdown by CMP, it and other mainstream 
magazines had worked in their own way through preservation problems 
relating to the physical storage medium and were starting to turn their 
attention to data formats, with a hint about the risks of proprietary 
formats.

Revisiting digital preservation issues in a public forum would bring up 
discussions of many situations where OpenDocument would provide a 
solution.
