[odf-discuss] Testing document with not so stellar results

Hi Kaj,

There is no reasonable way to implement multiple columns with the
present framework. So this sort of thing will have to wait for the "2.0"
version.

The current viewer works by converting ODF to HTML+CSS and giving the
output to an off-the-shelf HTML engine (Gecko). This allows us to
produce a fairly usable viewer with only a tiny fraction of the work.
The viewer you see today is roughly ~2 months work by 3 developers in
their spare time. That is lighting quick.

We do have a plan for a high-fidelity viewer. Call it "version 2.0". We
could essentially take KOffice and trim it down into a viewer. Since
KOffice is being ported to Windows and Mac OS X, it would cover our
target platforms. This project will take much longer than the one we're
doing today, but could be completed within the year 2007. Of course,
this is all depending on whether we receive any grants to fund this sort
of development. There is no guarantee that this will happen.

Cheers,
Daniel.
