Would it?
MS Office has been writing rtf (but with the .doc extention) when trying to be 
backwards compatible for years. Write a doc for Office97 from a newer one and 
you get an rtf. Again, as a .doc so the user doesn't notice, but an rtf 
nonetheless.

I think its an accepted way of working, and  rtf is apparently rich enough.
