[odf-discuss] One Laptop Per Child Project

Groklaw published a blurb in News Picks this ayem saying that Brazil is
about to place its order for a million OLPC laptops. That is in addition to
3 million laptops already ordered by three other countries. Other countries
are expected to sign on later.

I spent some time poking around the OLPC web site(s). The only mentions of
OpenDocument I found are here, <
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/OLPC_software_task_list#Copyright_Problems>, and
here, <http://wiki.laptop.org/go/OLPC_Thailand>.

My impression is that software development for the project is not yet at a
point where hard decisions have been made about file formats. If someone has
time, it might be good to plug into the project and see whether ODF would be
a good fit with the development plans. They seem to be fairly agreed that a
modification of Fedora Core will be the operating system, so MOOX should not
be in the running.

Given that this is in effect an entire computer system being created largely
from the ground up with millions of advance orders, a strong role for ODF in
software system design has the potential to have a whopping mid- to
long-term impact on ODF adoption. E.g., if ODF is the default file format
where appropriate, then later versions of software and add-on software will
tend to use ODF as well.

Best regards,

Marbux
